Ten Years of the EU Animal Health Regulation: Results and Perspectives

The EU assesses the successes of the Animal Health Regulation and identifies areas for improvement after ten years.

Ten years after its adoption, the European Commission has published an analysis of the EU Animal Health Regulation. The approach has reduced the impact of animal diseases, protecting farmers, rural communities, public health, economies, and trade. The Regulation has established a strong framework for preventive and risk-based measures. However, the Commission has acknowledged the need to improve the uniform application across all Member States, update the disease classification to address emerging threats, and consider a greater use of vaccination as a preventive tool. The current system is based on more recent scientific knowledge and is updated when necessary. The analysis has been made public in view of a conference on the 10th anniversary of the Regulation, which will take place in Brussels on July 8th and will be opened by Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare. The event will provide an opportunity to discuss the implementation, results, and future challenges. The conference will be accessible online.
